Sp. Fork first-grade hero saves classmate whose heart stopped
SPANISH FORK -- One minute he was playing with his friends at the start of PE class. The next minute, 6-year-old Logan Powell was lying unconscious and his friend was running to the teacher for help. Powell's heart and breathing had stopped.

Hallie Witt, also age 6, said her class was playing steal the flag outside when she noticed Powell lying face down on the grass. "So then I checked on him. When I rolled him over he did a gasp and I saw purple lips and slobber."
Witt knew to look for purple lips because her mom Katrina Witt had been ill over the summer and showed her daughters how to call for help should her oxygen levels drop.
Asking another friend to stay with Powell, Witt ran to the PE teacher.
"I grabbed onto her arm and I shaked her," Witt remembered. "I knew that would work because I do it to my mom a lot. I said, 'Logan's lying down on the floor and he's fainting.' "
Minutes later, Witt and her classmates were shepherded back inside the school. But their teacher, Jennifer Jolley, Powell's aunt, allowed Witt to stand by the window and watch the police and medical team arrive.
"I didn't think he would be OK," Witt said.
Lt. Steve Adams of the Spanish Fork Police Department said the 9-1-1 call from East Meadows Elementary School came at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. "There were officers already in the area, and the first arrived at the two-minute mark," about half the time an emergency response usually takes, Adams said.
The officer found three to four school personnel surrounding the boy on the grass. Two secretaries had begun CPR, according to school personnel.
Three minutes after the 9-1-1 call, another officer arrived with an automated external defibrillator, a medical device that can diagnose heart malfunction and shock the heart back into rhythm.
"The AED confirmed that a shock was needed, so that was administered," Adams said. "The officers then continued CPR until the highly trained ambulance personnel arrived."
Powell was transported first to Mountain View Hospital in Payson and then by helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Doctors diagnosed him with Long QT syndrome, a genetic condition in which the heart races and then stops.
Powell's mother Laura Powell said that "before he leaves the hospital, he will have a tiny defibrillator placed in his chest. That will get his heart started right away if it stops again." Testing is underway to determine if his six siblings may have the condition as well.
Laura Powell said the doctors believe her son was not out of oxygen for very long because he's "improved so much faster than anyone expected."
Although still in the pediatric intensive care unit, as of Friday night Powell was "talking, looking around, imagining" and the ventilator had been removed, said Laura Powell. "He's going to live and be fine."
To Powell's parents, the timing of the incident was "absolutely amazing," Laura Powell said. "If he had been playing in his room at home or asleep in the middle of the night when his heart stopped, we would have lost him."
The family credits Witt, as well as school and emergency personnel and the AED, with saving their son's life. "He's here because Hallie knew what to do," Laura Powell said. "She is truly a hero."
Lana Hiskey, spokeswoman for Nebo School District, said, "We are thrilled with how well our staff and the emergency personnel responded."
Adams said of the rescue effort, "We're so grateful to arrive on a scene where people there are doing the right thing. The staff at East Meadows were appropriately dealing with the young man. From the location of the responding officers and the AED to the great service of the medical personnel, so many things were right in line to make this a perfect outcome."
Given the importance of immediate AED administration for victims of heart failure, last month the Nebo School District board approved funding for an AED in every school, with more than one in each high school. District personnel tested AED models to ensure the design they purchased would be optimally user friendly, Hiskey said. "You open the package and audio instructions tell you just what to do."
Laura Powell said that her son's experience has helped the school district make distributing the devices a priority, as well as training to go with them. "This can potentially save someone else's life, too," she said.

Hallie my Hero

    • i just wanted you all to know HALLIE is a HERO.. here is a little short draft of what the event followed.....
(it was almost 1130 am when i was headed to get lincoln from school, there were 4 cop cars in the back of the school, i was worried wondering about bombs or guns, i called the office and said i was a concerned parent and saw 4 cops and if everything was ok, she told me a boy collapsed during pe and they were helping him)... then ladies in my ward wrote what they knew. Mrs Jolley is hallies and this little boys teacher, it was hallies class at PE, i was so proud of hallie and told her she did the right thing, hal said the office lady came out and started CPR on him. ..... hal also said they flew him to salt city (lol ) and something about primary.. so i hope the life support isnt true and he is ok. hopefully mrs jolley will let us know. im am impressed with the school for sending the note home. maybe they had a lot of concerned parents call.

       MOM A

Does anyone know exactly what happened today at east meadows? Marcus saw someone performing CPR on a student on his way home for lunch, and morgan just read on facebook that he was life flighted to Primary Childrens and is on life support. I'm sick just thinking about it and wondered if anyone knew the real story.

MOM B Oh no, I haven't heard anything. I know when I was at the doctor with baby today next to the hospital in Payson they brought a kid, I think about 6 yrs old, to the E.R. and my doctor ran over there. When I was leaving there was also the life flight helicopter landing - wonder if it was related. How sad!

MOM C They sent a note home with the kids saying that he collapsed during PE and had been taken by ambulance to the hospital and they were very grateful to those facutly members who were trained and helped respond. So sad!!

Katrina Wininger Witt My hallie had a little guy in her class.. her and a friend saw him lying face down rolled him over and she said his lips were purple and he had drool down his face and he made a big gasp so she ran and got the pe teacher. I called when I saw 4 police back there and they told me a boy collapsed during pe

Katrina Wininger Witt Im happy they sent a note home

Katrina Wininger Witt Oh I hope he is ok! ..my girls said its mrs jolleys nephew

    • MOM D
That name sounds so familiar. That is really sad, I hope he's okay!!! Jay told me about it when he got home. I would be freaking out!

2011 School Theme

"Treat others how you would want to be treated"

We've been busy so the fact that I actually got a theme this year prob wasn't possible without my sister Mindy. I'm grateful for moments like this were technology can help us plan an important day with our kids starting school just within seconds rather than weeks or months through the mail.
Our theme was "The Golden Rule" along with the book "You Are Special"

As I have been going through the girls couple days of school especially the first day, I feel there was a reason we did the theme we did. .... H.F must have known what would happen to my sweet little girl on her first day of first grade. Min, I don't know what you were doing or how you "got in tuned" if you want to call it that but i feel it totally helped us, even me.
Here are comments and things I wrote to my family and friends Monday 8-22-11.
We got so many responses and kind words that made me tear more. They were encouraging and telling Hallie she is Beautiful!! Even her Kindergarten teacher who offered to go talk with those kids and be there for hugs anytime Hallie needed one. We love Mrs. Lyman. The next day I even had a few friends and family ask how Hallie's day was the second day. Hallie told me it was much better and that Mrs. Jolley read a book about shapes who called each other names and were mean. Then they had a class talk. ( I emailed the teacher to let her aware of the issue) The teacher emailed me back so quick and was awesome about it.
This is such a very sensitive issue to me. I was very bullied. Not just in one school or one grade. My WHOLE life through elementary and Jr high .. some HS. It has made me who i am today, not strong as id like to be, very low self esteem etc. I don't want that for my kids.

My nieces EVEN in Germany last year had a very horrible experience with bullying on the way several times. I cried for them and wanted to be there to rescue them and give them hugs. ITS NOT OKAY!!! I pray for all children and especially mine to have a great fun year and love learning and to know they are awesome cause they are them!....
more to come
